Susan A. Gendron

Susan A. Gendron

Commissioner of Education

susan.gendron@maine.gov

When it comes to education, Maine is, indeed, on the move. As Education Week’s "Quality Counts" assessment of America’s schools indicated, Maine could rest on its laurels. After all, the achievement of our students in mathematics, science, and reading puts Maine at the top of the nation. But our state has chosen to set high expectations for its public school system. Indeed, we are committed to continuous improvement.

Phil Brookhouse

Phil Brookhouse

Statewide Integration Mentor

pbrookhouse@mainelearns.org

Phil is a 30 year veteran middle school science teacher who has tried to keep up with the best education, assessment and technology trends. He has been active in the Maine Education Association and is on the Board of Advisors for the Maine Math and Science Alliance. He was on the original design team for MLTI.

What happens in the classroom depends on the teacher, so staff development has always been a primary concern for him. He has worked with the Bates College student teaching program and the Lewiston/Auburn College CLASS Professional Development School program. Phil staffed the Bates College Math and Science Academy as a curriculum coordinator, helping teachers develop teaching units with deep, solid content. Underlying all his work is the philosophy, “The bottom line is the student, after all. Our job is to make memories.”
